Abstract

Introduction: Osteoporosis is a health problem in women, with high morbidity and mortality due to fractures, their basic needs being affected. Nursing can meet these care demands through effective self-care actions.

Objective: To systematize self-care in women with osteoporosis to support nursing interventions.

Methods: An integrative review was carried out of publications in the SciELO, Google Scholar, Medigraphic and Index databases, between April and November 2023. The PRISMA method was used. Original articles and theses in English and Spanish from the period 2016-2022 were included; while duplicates, not available in full text and inconsistent with the research were excluded. With the acronym PICO, the guiding question for the information search was elaborated. The descriptors autocuidado [self-care], mujeres [women], osteoporosis, cuidados de enfermería [nursing care] and enfermería [nursing] were used, as well as the Boolean operators AND OR. A critical, reflective synthesis was conducted according to methodological principles, by means of a thorough search to establish the connection between the purpose of the study in relation to the topic.

Conclusions: Self-care in women with osteoporosis for sustaining modes of action in nursing exposed the importance of self-care in prevention during climacteric and menopause; as well as in women with osteoporosis, for the prevention of bone fractures. Orem's theory was evidenced as a useful model for the support and maintenance of bone wellbeing.
