Abstract

Introduction: The puerperium is the period in which physiological and emotional changes occur that could be related to maternal mortality; That is why caring for these women always requires extreme care.

Objective: To characterize according to epidemiological, clinical, psychoaffective variables and the nursing care of postpartum women with complications.

Methods: A quantitative study with a cross-sectional descriptive design was carried out at the Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso General Hospital, Santiago de Cuba, Cuba; in the period from January to December 2022.The population was made up of 158 postpartum women with complications who were admitted to the intensive care unit, the unit of analysis was their medical records; A sample was selected by simple random sampling (n = 90). The variables studied were epidemiological, clinical and psychoaffective. The information was processed and summarized in absolute and relative frequencies (percentage). To identify whether there were relationships between the variables of interest, the Chi square of independence was applied with a significance level α = 0.05.

Results: The medical diagnosis upon admission does not depend, significantly, on the age of the selected postpartum woman (p = 0.16). The most common was preeclampsia (61.11% incidence); Likewise, those most affected were those between 15 and 19 years of age (77.78%) and 4 nursing interventions with a psychoaffective approach were applied.

Conclusions: Postpartum women with complications are characterized by being adolescents with preeclampsia, who from the Nursing point of view present anxiety; They also receive care with an insufficient psychoaffective focus.
