Abstract

Introduction: The surveillance of adverse events in pediatric intensive care should be supported by models and theories of nursing and other sciences, contributing to preventing incidents and guaranteeing the safety of people.

Objective: To analyze the theoretical referents that justify the surveillance of adverse events in pediatric intensive care.

Methods: A theoretical essay conceived as a reflective argumentation was carried out in the year 2023, by systematizing the scientific literature located in databases such as SciELO, Scopus, PubMed, Redalyc, Lilacs, Dialnet and Google Scholar. Without time limit, 109 documents were reviewed and 27 were selected. Bardin's conceptual and relational content analysis method was used to analyze the data.

Results: The carried out reflective argumentation permitted the analysis of the integration of models and theories in virtue of justifying the surveillance of adverse events in pediatric intensive care, such as the environmentalist theory, the theory of diversity and universality of cultural care, the hierarchy of needs theory, the Swiss cheese model and the general theory of systems.

Conclusions: Some theoretical referents that justify the surveillance of adverse events in the pediatric intensive care unit were analyzed, which has been documented to serve as a reference for researchers in the area of clinical safety; by relating the theories involved in function of improving the quality of healthcare based on the prevention and management of adverse events.
