Analysis of the Theory and Practice of Family Visitation in the Nursing Field

Introduction: Family visits in Nursing seek to interact with communities and families in their natural contexts to promote health promotion, disease prevention, and the strengthening of the intercultural approach to care. Although it is usual to perceive them from a risk perspective, they emerge as a valuable tool that requires a reflection on community competencies in nursing.
Objective: Understand the theory and practice of family visitation in the nursing setting.
Methods: Qualitative study with sequential data triangulation conducted in the municipality of Villamaría (Caldas, Colombia) between 2018 and 2023 with 7 families, based on a thematic review whose unit of analysis included 30 articles and an analysis from an interpretive ethnographic perspective, with participant observation and in-depth interviews.
Results: Aspects for planning stand out, such as the tools and instruments necessary to carry out the visits and those associated with social justice, leadership and interpersonal relationships with the families and with the Primary Health Care team to improve the quality of life of the families.
Conclusions: Family visits in the field of nursing promote a person-centered approach, improve health education, reduce social inequalities, and strengthen the role of the nursing professional as a leader and connector in primary health care, which advances in practical, research and theoretical aspects for the wellbeing of individuals, families and communities.
