Abstract

Introduction: people's safety culture is one of the hospital management indicators that allows identifying risks where their occurrence is not reported, and creates dangers in healthcare.

Objective: to evaluate the perception of people's safety culture in workers at a tertiary care hospital.

Methods: a quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out at the Frank País International Orthopedic Scientific Complex, Havana, Cuba, from January to May 2022. The sample was 417 workers selected intentionally, with inclusion criteria., have direct contact with people, the questionnaire adapted to the Cuban context Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture was applied, to identify strengths and weaknesses, the IBM SPSS v21.0 program was used, through absolute frequencies (N) and relative (%), means and standard deviation.

Results: the global analysis of the dimensions shows positive results in five of them, with the highest scores: teamwork within the units/services for 85.01%; expectations/actions to promote personal safety by superiors with 81.00%; low percentage: distribution of personnel 46.00 % and non-punishable response to error with 47.02%, the internal consistency of the questionnaire was 0.87.

Conclusions: the perception of workers regarding people's safety is low, its negative dimensions must be taken into account to work with errors and create an environment of safety and learning.
